What are your thoughts on Flightsuits and have you ever considered buying one? :)
We actually have purchased some flight suits and tried them on our doves.
If you are purchasing it for a parrot of any shape, size or species, I could not recommend this product highly enough. The design is ingenious and the bird will be comfortable with free range of motion with out being able to remove it.
However, there are drastic physiological differences between parrots and doves that make flightsuits not only unsuitable for doves, but damn near torture devices.
The dove who tested the Flight Suit for us is Sasami, my bottle fed baby who will let any one do anything to her with out spooking or complaining. She is completely trusting of people.
She tolerated me putting the flightsuit on her with out complaint, but when she went to take a step, the tiny hole for the tail feathers was not shaped to allow her to spread hers, and the diaper rubbed against her thighs, both of which threw her off balance and scared her so badly that she flopped around on the ground like she was dying of some hideous respiratory disease.
When she finally did right herself, she huddled on the ground and cried like an injured squeaker until I took it off.
Even after it was off, she refused to move for about two hours and wouldn’t come anywhere near me for days.
Doves have much weaker legs than parrots. Small, fine featured and delicate, they depend entirely on being perfectly balanced to walk. If anything restricts the spread of a dove’s tail feathers or hangs between their legs, walking comfortably becomes nearly impossible, throwing the bird into a panic attack or frightening it so badly that it refuses to move at all.
With my Sister in Law’s help, I’ve designed a dove-friendly safety harness that fits like a sleeveless shirt.
